Sjøfartsbyggningen, Oslo
The 100-year-old Sjøfartsbygningen in central Oslo was to be renovated. The client wanted to replace the existing 2nd-story glass roof over the inner courtyard with a modern and efficient roof at 6th-story level. The roof was to have a “light and airy” feel, and so we decided to only have the glass supports running in one direction. The dimensions of the steel profiles were kept down by using tension rods and tie rods to form a truss.
One of the major challenges of this project was its location in central Oslo. The street outside needed to be closed off in order to receive large deliveries, and this was only permitted at night. In order to minimize the amount of lifting we positioned a small crane on a temporary platform on the roof, and we could then use this to install the steel and glass components.
“By employing smart solutions for installation and design, we, in conjunction with the building antiquarian and architect, succeeded in creating an attractive steel and glass structure that provides a charming combination with the 100-year-old brick building.” -Anneli Davidsson, project manager SGS
