Midtåsen Skulpturpark, Sandefjord
The Sculpture Pavilion at Midtåsen is built to honor the artist Knut Steen and his work. The fragile white marble statues are well protected by the Concrete walls and the Glass roof.
Originally the architect Svein Lund had drawn all the frame work for the ceiling in steel. SG was consulted to find a way to avoid all shadows from the frames.
The answer as well as the challenge was to construct everything from glass.
The 20mm opal laminated glass is attached to structural glass fins of 30mm triple laminated glass. The fins spans up to 6m and has a height of 450mm. All glass is iron free to avoid coloring of the light. The structural fins are fastened into slits in the concrete only protected with 20mm plastic. The façades are also supported by glass fins bolted to the concrete floor.
