OSL Flygplats Gardemoen
OSL is, after Kastrup Copenhagen, the second biggest airport in the Nordic region.
For the last 3,5 years SG has been present at OSL, first constructing the 3200 m2 large checkered roof over the central building, then an extension of the main building façade. The third and so far largest expansion of the airport is the 300m long PirNord. With PirNords advanced form our BIM and 3D modelling knowledge came to its right, both for the double curved exterior glass façade supported by glass fins, as well as for the complex ceiling made up of 42 000 cassettes with different perforation and size.
A major challenge has been that the airport was in full operation during the construction – installation, crane and working environment had to be planned very carefully. SG is proud to have completed yet another project where we´ve pushed our limits and deepened our knowledge!
- The first two expansions of Gardermoen include a 3200 m2 checkered roof, facades for the central building as well as the exterior walls and facades of the railway station.
- In 2012 SG acquired the contract for the massive roof over the new train station. The curved roof is a slender construction spanning 60 meters supported by 16 coned steel beams. What appears to be a wooden construction is actually a combination of wood cladded steel and gluelam wood beams. The roof construction is then covered by glass and insulated panels in the caracteristict checkererd pattern. In the delivery SG has supplied and installed 700 tonnes of steel and 700 m3 of glue laminated wood.
- The façade for the central building is made to mimic the existing façade. Supported by distanced masts the expression is light and the dimensions of the glass bearing profiles could be kept as small as possible. The masts with arms were transported to building site readily painted in one piece in a custom built cradle to eliminate the need to join or paint the steel on building site. The installation was a joint effort by two mobile cranes lifting the masts from the truck into position without touching the ground.
The glass bearing aluminum system was developed in cooperation with Wicona to be upgraded to the new rules and regulations using triple layer IG units with a U-value of 0.5 W/m2K. - PirNord is the third and so far largest expansion of OSL airport. For the 300 meter long pier with its advanced form our BIM and 3D modelling knowledge came to its full right. Three glazed field runs along the full length of the pier. The upper, double curved façade starts as a roof to then gradually transform into a curved façade. The lower, negatively inclined facade is supported by glass fins spanning from 13 to 3 meters in height. The Tek 10 demand for a G-value of 0.15 is achieved by using a highly reflective sun screen fabric spanning 12,5 meters between the glass fins. To solve the sunscreen for the curved glass façade the glass is screen-printed to achieve a desired level of G-value. The screen-print coverage varies from 25-75 % to give an average of 50%.
The second big challenge was to model and mount the 42 000 cassettes which make up the beautiful ceiling of the pier. The cassettes vary in size and perforation to create a dynamic expression which along the skylights increase in transparency to let the natural light trough. The ceiling was modelled in 3D in a number of programs. At building site all attachment points where set out on the concrete floor with millimeter precision. We could then shoot a laser vertically to the roof and attach the threaded rods in the exact position. Numerous installation devices was engineered and manufactured to ensure the shape and precision required by the client.
The supporting framework for the ceiling is based on an extruded aluminium system from SG which has a number of functionalities built into the profiles. These ensure a fast and functional installation for curved as well as double curved ceilings.
